What Are Face Shields?

Basically, these are tubular bandannas that can be used for many things.  The common gateway into using them is people who need a bandanna but they are not completely satisfied with the performance that they offer.

This is where face shields come in.

These are soft, lightweight, comfortable, breathable, 100% Polyester Microfiber products that can be used as a face shield, bandanna, do-rag, and many more.

They have many uses that we will cover below, but some common uses are a face protector while fishing, hiking, or biking.  They can be used a a headband to keep sweat our of your eyes and face, and they can be used a stylish pony tail holder.  These are just a few of the uses, but they have many more.

What exactly are some of the benefits?

What Are Face Shields Used For?

Face shields are used for protecting your face from the sun and wind. They can also be used in a job setting to protect your face from debris like lawn clippings, sawdust, etc. Are they going to be effective as a professional dust mask when doing woodwork? Not likely, but that is not really what they are for. Having said that, we use them all the time when we do yard work.

 Face Shields For Hunting

SA Co. Forest Camo Dregs Face Shieldâ„¢ in Brown / Tubular Bandana / Polyester Microfiber / Multi-Use

There are many camouflage options, and these are perfect for any type of hunting.

No matter what type of hunting you do, adding more camouflage can help conceal you better.  In addition, it can provide some protection from wind if you are hunting in cooler seasons.

Now, these are made of thin polyester, so they will not do a great job or warming your face during winter hunting, but they will help reduce the wind against your skin.

The great news is that they do have Fleece lined face shields for colder weather!  So, you have the option of getting a regular one or one that is lined with fleece for ultimate warmth.

SA Fishing Co., a lifestyle outdoors brand, is based out of Boca Raton, Florida, so it’s no surprise that one of the biggest uses they have is for fishing.  In addition, the word “Fishing” is in their name.

The practical uses of these for fishing is to provide protection from the sun and wind.  It has an SPF of 40, and if worn as a headband it can help to prevent sweat from getting in your eyes.

It also protects your face from chilly wind when sitting on your Yeti Cooler while riding in your boat.

Face Shields For Motorcycle Riding

face shields for motorcycles

These can help protect you from the sun when riding, they can keep the bugs off of your face, and they can help with mild rain hitting your face when riding down the road.

Of course, if you just like to wear do-rags and bandannas while you ride, these work great for that too. The biggest benefit is some of them just look bad ass.

Face Shields For Bike Riding

These Face Shields are useful for biking just like they are for motorcycles. They can keep sweat from getting in your eyes and running down your face, and they can help protect you from the sun, wind, and light debris and dirt. Whether you want to wear them on your face, neck, or head, they can give you the protection that you need.  Plus they are definitely a head turner.

Face Shields For Camping, Hiking, And Backpacking

These things can be extremely beneficial when hiking.  In the summer, they work great as a headband which keeps sweat from running down your forehead.  I have also seen people use them on their wrists to wipe sweat off during hikes.  The microfiber material dries quickly in the summer heat, so it makes for a great wipe.

From a practical stand point, if you do a lot of photography in the summer, wearing them on your wrists can help keep sweat from running down your arm and onto your hand and camera.

Of course, there is always the standard benefit of them shielding your face and neck from the sun. These are lightweight, easy to pack, and a must for camping and backpacking.

There are many trips that have varying temperature differences between day and night.  You can be hiking in the heat and need protection for your neck.  These are light and protect you from the sun, so they work great during daytime hiking.

If you have ever been camping, some seasons have extremely hot and sunny days with chilly nights.  These will provide benefits in both settings whether you need to block the heat, or if you need something to block the chilly wind off of your face.

If you want to put it away, they can easily be put into a pocket.

Face Shields For Winter

While the regular ones offer some protection from the cold and wind, there is definitely a better option if you are needing something for serious winter activities.

If you are into any cold weather activity like snowboarding, skiing, hiking, or biking, then you need to grab a Thermal Fleece Face Shield.

Their Frost Tech technology combines a seamless fleece-sewn inner lining with their microfiber technology.  This allows for extreme thermal protection, wind protection, and moisture wicking.

There are over thirty designs so you should be able to find something that suits your lifestyle. These will offer protection from the cold wind on your face, head, and neck.

Face Shields For Exercising and Working Out

sa face shields for working out

It is really hard to explain how versatile this item of clothing is.

Keeps hair out of your face when running on a treadmill. Use as a headband to keep sweat off your face. Use as a wristband to wipe sweat off, and it keeps sweat from running down your arms.

You could also soak it in cold water and wear around your neck to keep cool.

Face Shields For Work

SA Co. Reflective Electric Yellow Face Shieldâ„¢ / Tubular Bandana / Polyester Microfiber / Multi-Use

These can be used for so many different professions, and we cannot name them all here, but some of the ones we have seen are:

Sanitation workers to cover their faces to prevent dirt, trash, and grime from splashing on their faces.

Construction and Road Workers to help with sweat, sun protection, and SA Fishing offers several in bright reflective colors for when you want to be seen from long distances.

This would be important for road workers near traffic. Any profession or hobby where things like debris, dust, or sawdust is constantly around your face.

SA Fishing Face Shields Review

face-shields

Honestly, I cannot remember the first time I heard about this brand, but it did not take long for me to like what SA Co. was about, and I placed my first order.  Ordering was easy, but it took me a little while to decide which designs I wanted.  I got five of them on my first order.

I received an email confirming my order, and the following day, I received an email with tracking.  I believe it was shipped out the next day, and within a few days I received my order.

These come individually wrapped with the SA logo printed all over the clear plastic bag that they each come in.

Upon opening the packet, the tubular bandanna is folded nicely inside, and with a quick shake, you can have it expanded fully.

They are about 17 inches long and 9.5 inches wide normally.  They will stretch some, so they can get a little bigger.

They are very light and thin, but not too thin where they feel cheap.  The edges are not folded over and sewn, but I have not had any issues with threads pulling.  But if I did, they have a Lifetime Warranty, so not much to worry about.

The designs are printed on, and I did not see any quality issues on the five that I received.

I have used mine for far more things than I thought I would have when I placed my first order.  I use it when I mow the grass or weed eat.  It keeps dust and debris out of my mouth and nose, and it keeps the sun off of my face and neck.  I don’t like putting on sunscreen, and these work great for the short amount of time I am out in the sun mowing.

I use them when I bike, hike, camp, and jog.  I use them in the day and I use them at night time.

My wife uses them as a headband to hold her hair back, and she uses it sometimes just for style.

Pro Tip:  It is much easier to place an order when you are getting your significant other one or two as well.  These work great for both men and women ya know!  Hey honey, I can get these cheaper if I buy a bundle.  Why don’t you pick one or two out?  My wife literally spent five minutes looking through them all trying to find the best design.  By the way, she got Pineapple Turquoise.

The best way to purchase them is directly from their site, and it is best to buy a bundle deal.  You can get a much better price, and you get to enjoy several different designs that way.

There are a couple of links below for a few of their deals like buy one get four free.

Custom Face Shields

You can purchase custom tubular bandanna face shields from SA.  Their pricing model gives you a discount based on the volume that you order, and currently their website states a two week turnaround for custom orders.

There are over 150 designs that you can choose from as a starting base, or you can create one from scratch.

They come individually packed with a lifetime warranty.

You can get the lowest price by ordering 300 or more.

How To Wear A Face Shield

There are tons of uses for the SA Company face shield.  Some of the most common uses are:

  • Face Shield
  • Bandana
  • Balaclava
  • Ponytail
  • Beanie
  • Neck Gaiter
  • Wrist-Band
  • Do-Rag
  • Sahariane
  • Pirate

Summary

OK, enough of the rambling.  How can I get some of these?  I have provided links to their best deals on the images below.  These are a killer deal for around $3-$4 each.  Of course, you always have the option to buy just one at regular price.

If you already own some of these, please let us know in the comments how you like to use them.

Why Are Yeti Coolers So Expensive? Are They Worth It?

why-are-yeti-coolers-so-expensive

I remember the first time I saw a Yeti Cooler in a store.  I thought, that looks cool and rugged.  I wonder how much it is?  Wow, they want that much for a cooler?  You have got to be kidding me?  This made me think, why are Yeti Coolers so expensive and are they worth it?

Yeti Coolers are so expensive because of the manufacturing process that they use to make them.  They are made using rotomolded polyethelyne which is more costly, but it produces a more durable cooler that does a better job at keeping things colder for longer durations.

I was used to buying Styrofoam coolers, and ones that cost twenty dollars.  I spent hours of research on the internet and I talked to outdoors equipment stores that sold them because I needed to have the answer.

This article will go over in depth on why they cost so much.  You may not like some of the reasons.

History of the Yeti Brand

If you are like me, stories about how brands become successful are fascinating.  This is not just a history lesson, but it is important to learn about this to fully understand why the cost is what it is.

The idea came from two brothers from Texas who were also fishermen.  They wanted a durable cooler that they could also stand on as a fishing platform from their boat.  It also had to keep ice longer than a normal cooler.

One of them noticed a different style of cooler at a retail store or a trade show (I have read both.)  It was heavier and more rugged than the average cooler.  It was made in Thailand, and then he decided to start importing that cooler in so that he could sell it to outdoor equipment stores.

The cooler was different because it was manufactured by a process called rotomolding.  This produced a seamless cooler that was thicker and heavier.

Not happy with the current design, they met with a manufacturing plant in the Philippines.  This is the start of the Yeti Cooler and it’s high price.

The Market

I think it is important to understand a little bit about the market because it has a large influence on the cost of the Yeti cooler.

In 2006 Yeti was launched with a business plan to not compete with cooler giants like Igloo and Coleman.  These brands dominated big box retail stores which means that small businesses that catered to fishermen, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts could not compete.

In addition, coolers are large and take up a lot of space which is not something that small retail businesses have.  The icing on the cake was the small profit margin.  There is just not a huge profit from selling a $25 dollar cooler.  So, these smalls shops did not even think about selling coolers.

Because of the biaxial rotomolding design, the coolers were very expensive to make, and initially, they needed to sell them for about $300.

This high price allowed them to be sold in the small outdoors businesses.  Almost everyone who goes to a fishing retail store or to a hunting store uses coolers.  But, none of them carried coolers.

Having something that catered to this specific market was gold, and because of the high price point, the businesses were able to get a high profit on selling them which they would not have been able to do with an Igloo.

Yeti continued to work these types of businesses and trade shows, and over the years, the brand has exploded into more and more markets.

To recap, the high cost of the product was actually a selling point to small businesses who could make a large profit on the cooler.  Just selling a couple of them a month could get them a couple hundred dollars in profit.  If you were a business, would you rather sell 2 Yeti’s or 20 regular coolers?

The Design and Manufacturing

Ok, so we have discussed the market and business plan effecting the cost to make them so expensive, now we can take a look at the actual cost to manufacture.

Another reason the Yeti coolers cost so much is due to their design and manufacturing.

I briefly touched on this, but they are made from rotomolded polyethelyne.  This makes them very durable and virtually indestructible.  It costs more to make these than it does a regular cooler.  Does this design process account for the entire cost that is 10X a regular cooler?  Of course not, but it does bring value, and the process is more costly.  So, if they cost more to make, then they are going to be more expensive.

Take a look at this video of a 500 pound man trying to break a Yeti cooler.  After you watch this, you will see how well they are made.

Now, you may be thinking.  My cooler is never going to get body slammed by a 500 pound wrestler, and it will never be thrown off a cliff.  That’s not the point.  It’s the fact that these are extremely well made and very durable.

You don’t have to be delicate with it.  Toss it in the back of your truck.  Throw it off the back of your pick up onto the ground.  Toss it around in your boat and sling it on to the dock.  These can take a beating.

If you need something that will last a lifetime and you need a cooler that will take abuse, then get a Yeti.  If you need to pack Capri Suns and PB&J’s to take the kids to the neighborhood pool, then a $30 dollar Coleman will be just fine.

To recap, a rotomolded cooler costs more to make, so they are going to be more expensive.

The Image Of The Yeti Brand

why are yetis so expensive

When Yeti began, it did not have an image, but it certainly developed one over time.

They used brand ambassadors like saltwater fishing legend Flip Pallot to promote their products.  Through their ambassadors and clever marketing, they built up an image of the die hard outdoorsmen.

The cooler became a must have.

In marketing terms, it is referred to as an “aspirational brand.”  This means that some people will pay a premium for a brand even though they know there is a similar product on the market that costs much less.

The brand definitely has cachet.  In the beginning, Yeti gave away stickers and hats with every cooler purchase.  Now, they charge premium prices for merchandise and apparel.  When people are buying your stickers and putting them on their cars, and they don’t even own any of your products, you have built a great brand and image.

Think about it this way, if you are selling coolers faster than you can make them, and if you are charging premium prices for them, would it make sense to significantly reduce the cost?

Yeti has positioned itself as an outdoors brand like North Face and Patagonia, and they are not just a cooler manufacturer.

To recap, Yeti coolers are the Rolls Royce of keeping things cold.  They charge more because they can, and it is part of their brand.  You may not like that, but it is what it is.

Yeti Cooler Warranty

Yeti coolers like the Tundra and the Roadie have a 5 year warranty.  The good news is that the cooler is designed to have parts that are easily replaced if they do break.  If you buy an expensive cooler, you don’t want it to be useless if the handle breaks on it.

What does this have to do with the cost?  Having a 5 year warranty costs the manufacturer money, and they have to take into account the loss in revenue from shipping brand new coolers to people for free.

While they are made extremely well, they can break.

To submit a claim you can visit the Yeti Warranty Information Page.

Most Expensive Yeti Cooler

The most expensive Yeti is the Tundra 350 Cooler.  You can check out it’s current price on amazon here.

The YETI Tundra 350 is huge with 19,000 cubic inches of capacity and it has enough space to hold around 82 gallons.

The  350 dimensions are 63 X 25 X 24 inches

It is a heavy one though at almost 90 pounds empty.

The great news is that it can hold 259 cans of beer or 326 pounds of ice.

This cooler is massive and is for someone who needs to hold a lot.  Think of someone who has to travel long distances with meat for a bbq competition.  If that is you, then you need this cooler.  It will hold a lot of meat, and it will keep it cold for a long time.

Are Yeti Coolers Worth It?

Yeti coolers are worth it if you need a rugged and durable cooler that can keep ice for a long time.

Let me give you a personal example.  I was camping with a group, and on the second night someone had to leave to go get more ice to keep things cold and frozen.  They had to get in their car, drive 15 minutes away, load ten bags of ice in their car, drive 15 minutes back, and unload all the ice and refill all the coolers.  All of that could have been avoided if they had a Yeti.  Now, if this situation happens once every five years, probably not necessary, but this group camps about nine times per year.

If you need an extremely rugged cooler, then yes.

If you need to keep ice for 5-7 days, then yes.

If you are in the food business, and you need to keep things frozen while mobile, then yes.

Summary

Yeti Coolers are so expensive because:

  • They built their brand on small fishing and hunting retail businesses selling premium and expensive coolers so that these shops could receive a huge profit from them
  • They are designed using rotomolded construction which is more costly than normal
  • It is a “premium” brand so it needs a premium price
  • It comes with a five year warranty
  • They were first to sell premium coolers for a niche market which means they set the price
  • Their business model was not to compete in the big box retail store cooler market, instead it was to go after a small niche market

How Do Yetis Work

how-do-yetis work

Yeti has become one of the best brands in the last decade.  They took the cooler and drinkware market and turned it upside down.  Before Yeti, there was no “IT” cooler to have, but now it is a must have, especially if you are into the outdoors.  Their meteoric rise in popularity begs the questions how do Yetis work?

Yeti cups work by using the technology of vacuum insulation. This vacuum insulation keeps hot air out and cold air in by convection and conduction.  Plus, it is made from stainless steel which is a poor conductor.  We will take a look at how Yeti cups work so well.

Yeti coolers work by using the technology of rotomolding.  We will look at Yeti coolers as well.

How Do Yeti Cups Work?

The Yeti technology has been around for a very long time, but marketing and promotion wins.  I remember the first time that I inquired about these magical cups.

The answer I received was something along the lines of the cup keeps ice frozen for a very long time, like overnight.

I really thought, hmmph, who cares, I don’t need ice to last that long.  But, the power of the brand took over, and I received this Yeti Rambler as a gift.

Now I have the hat, the lifestyle sticker on my car, 3 coolers, and a tumbler.  No seriously, I don’t have all that, but I do love my Yeti products [x_icon type=”smile-o”].

Honestly, I love the brand and the products.

Enough of the rambling, let’s get on to the Yeti technology.

How Are Yeti Cups Made

how do yeti cups work

If we look at the cup design, there is in inner and outer layer with a vacuum insulation in between.  This means there is almost zero air in the middle.

This design minimizes two of the three types of heat transfer.  Because there is no air, there is no convection and no conduction.  There is only radiant heat transfer between the inner and outer walls.

Now this does not apply to the top which is just a plastic lid, but overall, this greatly reduces the surface area that allows for conduction and convection.

First, we need to discuss what those are.

Conduction is the process by which heat or electricity is directly transmitted through a substance when there is a difference of temperature without movement of the material.

Convection is the movement caused within a fluid by the tendency of hotter and therefore less dense material to rise, and colder, denser material to sink, which consequently results in transfer of heat.

The Yeti cup works by taking advantage of the science of those two principals.

If we look at how the design impacts conduction, heat transfer is greatly reduced because the inner wall has minimal contact with the outer wall.  In addition, the material being used is a poor conductor of heat.

In a normal cup, the liquid or the ice inside the cup is exposed to only one layer which is the outer layer so it is a better conductor of heat than a Yeti cup.

Heat cannot efficiently conduct from the inside to the outside, and from the outside to the inside.  Due to less transfer of heat, the ice stays colder longer.

If we look at how the design impacts convection, we need to consider the impact of air.  Air is good at convecting heat, and when you have almost zero air in the middle of the Yeti, there is almost zero convection of heat.

This of course, is only considering the steel walls, not the plastic top.

The last type of heat transfer is radiation.  There is not much that can be done about the suns radiation, but the design can help reduce it.  The interiors of each of the walls are coated/polished so that they reflect thermal radiation.

The cups simply works on science.

These cups are not cheap, but they are well branded, they are durable and sturdy.  Every different style of cup that Yeti makes is great quality.

30 Ounce Tumbler30 Ounce Tumbler20 Ounce Tumbler

What Is A Yeti Cup Made Out Of?

Yeti cups are made of 18.8 grade stainless steel which is corrosion resistant.  This provides a durable and strong cup, and it gives it a nice, sleek, modern look.

What is inside a Yeti cup?  Basically nothing due to its vacuum seal.  This is the magic that keeps ice so long.  Let’s look at the technology for this cup.

How Do Yeti Coolers Work?

how do yeti coolers work

Yeti coolers like this Yeti Roadie 20 work by using a manufacturing process called rotomolding or rotational molding.

This is a process where liquid polymer is poured into a rotating hollow mold.  After the plastic polymer cools a bit, more of it is added.  This allows the cooler to be made with thick plastic walls that are uniform without any seams.

Because it lacks seams, it is more durable than a cooler that is made with multiple parts attached together.  These are so durable, that if you put a padlock on it, they are certified IGBC bear proof.

There is a lot of insulation in these coolers.  Yeti coolers have 2 inches of insulation in the walls and base and up to three inches in the lid.  In addition the top interlocks with the body instead of just resting on the top.

Normal coolers do not have near as thick insulation as the Yeti does.

Inside is pressure injected polyurethane foam that does a great job of retaining cold.

The rotomolding design, thick walls, and thick insulation allow these coolers to keep ice up to 7 days.

Regular coolers do not have this seamless design, and they do not have 3 inch thick insulation, therefore, they do not work as well.

This design also plays into why yeti coolers are so expensive.

What is inside a Yeti Cooler and how does it keep ice for so long?

There really is nothing special inside of a Yeti Cooler except for a thick piece of Styrofoam that is in the middle of the rotomolded plastic.  The insulation is three inches thick which is a lot thicker than most coolers.  Combine that with the rotomolded design, and you will get ice that stays frozen longer in the cooler.  Simply put, it is just a better built cooler that is not cheaply made and put together.

Brief History of Yeti

Yeti was formed by two fishermen who wanted a tough cooler that they could take fishing.  They wanted it to be tough, and it had to withstand punishment like no other cooler on the market.

They specifically wanted to be able to use it as a casting platform, so it needed to withstand the weight of a person on it.  It also needed to keep ice frozen longer than a normal cooler.

One of them saw a rugged cooler manufactured from Thailand at a local retailer, and it got him thinking.  This was the start of getting into the cooler business with the outdoors market.

Soon, they started an import business to market the cooler to fishing shops and outdoor equipment stores.  They had some success, but it was not the exact product they were looking for.

The manufacturer in Thailand could not accommodate their needs, so they had to look elsewhere.

They wanted a redesign of the cooler, so they took their idea to a manufacturer in the Philippines.  From there, the Yeti prototype was made.

How Do Yeti Cups Work So Well

The Yeti cups work so well because of minimized convection, conduction, and radiation which is improved by a vacuum seal.

Regarding the Yeti cooler technology.  It is nothing super special.  It involves rotomolding manufacturing and very thick insulation.  This allows it to keep ice frozen for a longer time.

Although the Yeti is expensive, they are worth it if you need a rugged cooler for outdoor use.

Please feel free to share your Yeti stories below.  We would love to hear them!

Belts With Hidden Pockets – Best Travel Security Belts

belt-with-hidden-pocket

Belts With Hidden Pockets

Sometimes you just need to wear a belt with a hidden pocket.  Whether you need to hide money, a flash drive, a key, or jewelry, there are several great belts that offer style with a hidden place to put things.

These types of belts are great for hiking, camping, traveling, and more.

Granted, it’s nice to have a secret place to put money, but you would not want to use this like a wallet as it would be inconvenient to remove your belt each time you needed to get money.

How To Choose The Best Travel Security Belt

These belts come in different materials and different looks.  If you are looking for a more stylish belt, then you should go for a nice leather belt.

If you are using this for camping, hiking, cycling, etc., then you should consider getting a nylon belt that is water resistant and rugged.

If you are needing this type of belt for travel security, then a nice lightweight nylon belt will be the best for you.  This will allow you to easily go through TSA checkpoints without any metal on your belt setting off the metal detector.

Some of the belts come in different colors and others do not.  So, if style is important, you will need to choose a brand that offers more colors.

If you are looking for a leather belt with a hidden pocket, this is the belt for you.  This is a great looking belt that is handmade from soft full grain leather.

Hide & Drink’s belts are hand cut and handcrafted using the finest leather.  The quality of full grain leather will help the belt last a long time, and it makes it durable.

If you are looking for a high-end, artisan made belt, then look no further.

HIDDEN SECURE POCKET IN THE SEAMS: Hide & Drink’s Thick Leather Belt boasts a sneaky little pocket that is sewn into the reverse side of the belt. The small compartment is big enough to hide away dollar bills, a key, and other small objects that you want to keep secure from potential thieves, but small enough for it not to be too bulky, uncomfortable or obvious. Makes for a great belt for traveling with, or even serves as a place to sneak fun things past festival security.

FINELY HAND STITCHED: The belt is handmade by expert local artisans of Pastores, Guatemala, a town wholly dedicated to the crafting of leather goods. The belt is hand cut, and finished with a fine stitching method than not only looks good, but also makes for a durable belt that will give you a lifetime of use. Any loose ends are passed over with an open flame to ensure no unravelling during its lifetime.

AVAILABLE IN A VARIETY OF SIZES: The belt measures 1.5 inches wide and 5mm thick, and is available in 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44 and 46 inches long. Make sure that when you are considering the length of your belt, always purchase one size up than the waist size of your pants. If you’re a 36, buy a 38-inch belt, if you’re a 37, a 38-inch belt works fine, too.
