Throughout time, there have been many famous men with beards. Some of these men are well known only because of their facial hair. When you think of certain beard styles like mutton chops and goatees, there may be certain famous men that come to mind. If you think back through all of history, there have been some great ones.

We have made a list of historical figures with beards. This spans thousands of years from Jesus all the way to modern day.

1. Abraham Lincoln

Abe Lincoln was the 16th President Of The United States. He was also the first bearded President. He is famous for his beard with no mustache look.

2. Santa Claus

Santa Claus is probably the most famous bearded man in the world. While he is a legendary character, his real life interpretation always has a full grey beard. Santa Claus also made our list of the most famous bearded characters.

3. Jesus Christ

The depiction of Jesus Christ with a beard emerged around 300 AD. While there are still discussions on whether he had long or short hair, almost all depictions of him since the 6th Century show him with a beard.

Ambrose Burnside may be just another Civil War General, but look closely at his last name and the picture of his beard. The facial hair name of “sideburns” comes from his last name. His are certainly different than the modern version. Today, they do not typically connect to a mustache nor are they that big. He definitely has one of the most interesting beards in history.

Sketches of Leonardo Da Vinci show that he kept a long beard which was not common during his time. He was also said to keep it very long and luxurious looking. Da Vinci is probably the most famous artist with a beard.

Karl Marx is widely known for his large shaggy grey beard with a darker mustache. It was a unique style in the 19th century for sure. He later wrote a note where he described getting his beard shaved off by a barber.

7. Charles Darwin

Darwin may have had a long grey beard, but did you know there was a reason for that. Darwin suffered eczema, and this helped to ease the issue. Darwin also grew a beard so that he would not be recognized. According to historians, this would have been around 1862 which was a few years after he published The Origin Of Species. He was a private man, and he did not like the fame that came with his book.

Zeus, the Greek god has been in countless movies and depictions throughout history. He is always seen with his curly beard.

When you think of the US Government, Uncle Sam comes to mind. The guy with the top hat and long white goatee. This image came out in 1917, and has been the face of the government for over 100 years now.

Osama Bin Laden became famous in the 1990’s for his organizations attacks all over the world. His face was all over global media for a decade. For this, he has one of the most recognizable beards in history.

The rock band ZZ Top has the most iconic beards in the music industry. They have been wearing this style of facial hair since the 1970’s. Fifty years of looking like that will get you added to this list easily. Dusty Hill and Billy Gibbons will go down in history for both their music and their facial hair.

Sigmund Freud is probably the most recognized neurologist in history. His works are still taught today. He was always clean cut and dressed well. His nicely trimmed beard and mustache matched his style.

Fidel Castro was known as the leader of Cuba until 2008. He is famous for the Bay of Pigs, The Cuban Missle Crisis, and he was a global figure most of his adult life. He always had a beard, even when it turned grey.
